Pre-Teach: the ‘1-2-3-knee’
Focus: External
Purpose: To warm up the body and lubricate spine and ribcage
Pre-teach: Try this with me: walk 1-2-3 and then lift up your knee on the four count. Stay in the rhythm and as you dance this move around the room I want you to explore posing as you lift your knee. So, 1-2-3-pose. You can add your arms, your head, your shoulder, your hands – simply play with posing in different ways everytime.
First move: Slow-quick-quick. Put this rhythm in your feet: slow-quick-quick. It has a tango like feel to it, so give yourself permission to dance the SQQ with drama, confidence and attitude.
Travel the room: explore moving sideways, turning, and even moving backwards with your SQQ.
Can you add your arms? Strong, powerful and elegant arm movements.
You can’t get it wrong.
What happens if you allow your face to express it too?
Can you involve more body parts to your dance?
Infuse it with your breath.
Have you tried turning yet?
How can you play with the tango style in your dance?
Somewhere in the room you haven’t been yet? Keep moving into the open spaces on the dance floor.
Second move: OTS open arms. Gently.
Third move: 1-2-3-knee. Walk-1-2-3 and lift your knee. Add your arms. Now start exploring different poses everytime you lift the knee.
Can you turn as you lift your knee?
Can you add your hands?
How can you move your spine with it? You can contract your upper body or extend it as you lift your knee.
Breathe big with it.
Let your neck be soft so you allow for movement in your head too.
How can you look different with each pose?
Dance it with confidence, drama and attitude.Your way is the right way!
Fourth move: Melting and lifting. Softly start to melt your body- slowly and gently. Now begin to lift it up again – expanding and opening.
Now see if you can melt in a different way? And now come back up in a different way too.
Explore your options.
Play with your levels.
DANCE it in your own way. Melting and lifting.
Make it feel good.
Can you add your head?
What about your hands?
Can you get your whole body dancing?
Figure out how to get your spine moving too.
