Pre-Teach: Yes. You can explain the “soul train”- having 2 lines of people and then each person takes a turn going down the middle and it repeats over and over. Person taking solo down the middle is being cheered on by the lines that are clapping and dancing in place.
Focus: External
Purpose: To build confidence as each person gets to be a star as they are cheered on by the rest of the class.
First move: Set up the 2 lines and explain that the person at the “top” of the line travels their dance down between the lines and takes their spot at the end.
With younger groups you might want to practice this before you start the music to avoid distraction and confusion.
I always start with everyone clapping and we get into position.
Most of the time students are ready to go and I do not offer any moves, but if your group is tentative have the lines practice moving before the first person starts.
Transitions:
Set up the experience and go!
