Pre-Teach: Yes – hand jive
Focus: External
Purpose: To increase heart rate and explore and practice coordination
First move: hand-jive – I say “slap” (2), “clap” (2), “scissors” (2 R/L), “fists” (2 R/L), “thumbs” (2 R/L). Repeat is over and over, then remind them to try and DANCE it!
This is a dance contest in the movie!! The head is dancing, the face is expressive and the body/shoulders bouncing! I will sometimes have them do it with their eyes closed as this helps with muscle memory.
On the last round, I sometimes have them get into the hand jive and then ask them to add the chug! This is a great brain and coordination challenge.
Second move: dance walk – just put the beat in your feet and dance it!! Travel anywhere and use this as a break for them not to think in between the other moves.
Third move: chug with shimmy – take the legs wide and do little chugs in different directions. Adding the shoulder shimmy, either at a slow tempo or a fast tempo, have them play with it.
Reassure them that it IS a challenge and to just have fun with it. RELAX! This will boost cardio so manage the time well and go back to dance walk or hand jive when you want.
Transitions:
*WOW, I DO NOT want to give you counts on this song. There are SO many ways you can do it, I think I do it different each time I lead it.
You can change where you feel it or where you think your participants need it. The chug is not easy and will challenge the cardio for sure.
There is coordination benefit in trying to shimmy and chug together as well as do the hand jive and chug together at the end, IF ONLY you feel like trying it.
You have to be intuitive on this song. Practice it a bit before for sure to know when the changes occur, but remember do the three moves and you cannot get this wrong!!
